Icaraizinho or Jericoacoara? Which Destination Should You Choose?

One of the most common questions travelers ask when planning a trip to the west coast of Ceará is: should I choose Icaraizinho or Jericoacoara?

Both destinations are located along the same coastline, enjoy excellent wind conditions and attract kitesurfers from around the world. Yet the experience they offer is completely different. Here’s an honest comparison to help you decide.

Jericoacoara — the lively classic

Jericoacoara, often simply called “Jeri”, is an internationally famous destination. It offers sophisticated hotels, a vibrant nightlife, excellent restaurants and a thriving kitesurf scene.

It’s the perfect place for travelers who enjoy beach parties, meeting people from all over the world and having plenty of entertainment options day and night.

The downside? Jeri is expensive, often crowded and has lost some of its original authenticity as tourism has grown over the years.

Icaraizinho de Amontada — the authentic choice

Icaraizinho is smaller, quieter and more family-friendly. The village has preserved the charm of a destination that has not yet been overtaken by mass tourism: fishermen still share the beach with visitors, local cuisine remains authentic, and the atmosphere is relaxed.

Wind conditions are every bit as good as Jericoacoara’s, and some riders even consider them better during certain periods of the year. For travelers looking for great kitesurfing, excellent food, true relaxation and more reasonable prices, Icaraizinho is often the obvious choice.

Kitesurfing: a tie

Both destinations enjoy excellent wind conditions from June through January.

Icaraizinho has the advantage of Lagoa dos Patos, a shallow freshwater lagoon perfect for beginners, as well as beautiful downwind routes along the coast.

Jericoacoara offers a larger number of schools and a bigger kitesurf community, but also more crowded spots and greater competition for space on the water.

Gastronomy: Icaraizinho surprises

The restaurant scene in Icaraizinho has grown significantly in recent years.

The País Tropical Restaurant, for example, serves quality Ceará-inspired cuisine with vegetarian and vegan options that often surprise visitors given the size of the village.

Jericoacoara offers more restaurants overall, but you’ll usually pay considerably more for a similar level of quality.

For families: Icaraizinho wins

Icaraizinho’s peaceful atmosphere makes it an excellent destination for families traveling with children.

Less noise, less traffic and quieter beaches create the perfect environment for a relaxing vacation.

For nightlife and socializing: Jericoacoara wins

If your priority is meeting people, going out at night and enjoying a lively social scene, Jericoacoara remains the top choice on Ceará’s coast.

Our opinion

If you’re looking for authenticity, reliable wind, excellent food and genuine relaxation, choose Icaraizinho.

If you prefer nightlife, entertainment and a more developed tourism infrastructure, Jericoacoara may be a better fit.

Both destinations are worth visiting — they simply offer two very different ways to experience the beauty of Ceará.
